On the cover: A seedling of Pediocactus sileri demonstrating strong growth of radial spines. The current season's growth is a fiery red, fading to black. The previous years' growth is light grey. Development of centrals will occur later on new tubercles as the plant matures. The plant pictured is about 1.25 inches in diameter. Pediocactus sileri is popularly known as the Gypsum Cactus, due to its preference for growing on substrates containing gypsum. Rob Skillin shows many other habitat examples in this issue's article on The Gypsum Cactus. |
