Cover illustration: Agave impressa is named for the impressed or printed patterns of spiny leaf margins formed by waxy deposits when juvenile leaves are in contact with each other. Although found in many agaves, this pattern is actually more conspicuous on our cover plant than the spines are themselves. Such patterns are also displayed - though less conspicuously - on the plant of A.bovicornuta on the cover of our July-August issue. Gentry who described A.impressa called this phenomenon "bud-printing". The species itself is only known from a small area in tropical coastal Mexico and is reputedly difficult to cultivate. We show it here photographed by Julia Etter and Martin Kristen, whose article in this issue discusses it and its companion A.nayaritensis
